Police have arrested an imam of a mosque in a case filed in connection with the rape of an eight-year-old child in Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria.
Police arrested Shihab Uddin (25) from Aturkoda village in Nasirnagar upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
Later, when the police produced Shihab in court, the Brahmanbaria court sent him to jail.
Police said Shihab was the imam of a local mosque in Borail Purbapara village of Nabinagar. He also taught Arabic to children in a maktab.
On April 26, when the boy went to the Maktab to study Arabic, Shihab took the boy to his room and raped him.
Upon learning of the incident, the child's mother filed a case with Nabinagar Police Station.
Nabinagar Police Station OC Ranjit Roy said, "Shihab fled after raping the boy. Based on a secret tip-off, we arrested him from Nasirnagar Upazila."
“After initial interrogation, Shihab admitted the charges against him and confessed to his crime in the Brahmanbaria court,” he added.
